Vail College Fellows

The Charles B. Vail College Fellows Program is an academic program of joint faculty/student research projects.  Many of these projects will lead to scholarly presentations and to joint publications.  Some students receive academic credit for their projects; others receive a tuition stipend.

Vail Fellows can hone their skills in a particular area while, at the same time, getting to work closely with a faculty member. Collaborating with faculty members in teaching, research, publishing, and conference presentations offers opportunities for growth and development not usually available to students in the traditional undergraduate classroom.

"Collaborative" is the key word for this program. Vail College Fellows projects are not simply faculty-sponsored projects, but are, instead, projects that are truly collaborations between student and faculty member.

The program has two tiers.  Students in the first tier—Teaching Fellows and Research Fellows—receive academic credit and register for 498 or 493 in the appropriate discipline.  Students in the second tier—Distinguished Teaching and Research Fellows—receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship.

Interested faculty members and student partners propose a project by submitting an application to the Provost's office in early April. The Faculty Development Committee reviews the proposals and makes the final decisions.

Eligible students should have at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Further information is available in the Catalog, under Individualized Study, Undergraduate Research. Contact Assistant Provost, Martha Ann Stevenson (mstevens@bsc.edu).
